Simpler alternative. Take rock, place in heated saltwater at a gravity of 1.040. Dunk it for a minute or two. If it's still happy after that time and hasn't ejected. It deserves a medal.
This worked! Rather than measuring, I just put the rock in a 2g bucket with tank water, and added a quarter cup of salt, stirred, and waited. Rinse and repeat. Got up to 1 full cup before he scooted. The refractometer was up to 1.060. Here's the little troublemaker, going into the soon-to-be refugium.

Nice! Some people pay extra for those little buggers.

I keep wondering if I have one in there. I keep hearing, once in a while, what sounds like a shell knocking on the glass but never see which snail or exactly where. I've heard Mantis make a clicking sound. It sounds just like when my blue leg hermit hits his shell against the glass in my 32 when he circles the perimeter. I've looked at night too and don't see anyone or mystery snail demises. I do have a lot of porcelain crabs and some emeralds in there.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
