I started mine out with the cheapest base rock I could find on Amazon. Looks great 3 years later. If I were starting a new tank I would be using all gulfliverock or kp rock though.

Live rock from KP aquatics.

It's my perception that all live rock is cured when coming from a vendor regardless if it's local or air freight. When getting it shipped via air freight there is a natural amount of die off but the rock is still cured if cured means there's establish nitrifying bacteria on it. 'Curing' it when you receive it simply means allowing time for that bacteria to expand and meet the increased availability of ammonia from the die off and subsequently process it. Maybe I'm incorrect, and I wonder what others think (so i checked cured and uncured lol).

My system has 150 pounds of TBS rock that went straight from the airport into the tank. It also has an equal amount of Carib sea Liferock and some Marco rock.

Turned out like this

I used mostly dry rock to begin with, with some uncured live rock. Unfortunately I had my AI Prime at max and bleached out the live rock. D: My system was also in flux back then with me dosing ammonia and macro-organisms that came with the live rock died. Whoops.

Marco rock and Stax for a NSA. It took a while to cycle, but turned out well in my opinion. I like using Stax for islands as they can be moved or removed easily.

I started with an awesome aquascape using dry Marco rocks. I did everything I could to prevent dinos and still got them because I didn’t saturate my rocks with p04.
I ended up ordering some gulf live rock and tossed in a few pieces once I beat back the dinos.

I started my tank with Carbisea LifeRock Shapes. Easy to aquascape and looks good day 1. Next tank I will do a mixture of dry and live to help seed the tank.

@happyhourhero - I have some dry ceramic VidaRock and CaribSea rubble - why and how would I saturate it with p04?

Had a bad outbreak of aptasia bought 3 fish that took care of it then got red flat worms. Used flat worm x ,left it in the alloted time and turned on skimmer and 2 pounds of charcoal. That morning I got up to find salt creep in the airway of my skimmer. Killed everything. One year latter took the 110 pounds of dead rock bleached it . Let it air dry put it in salt water with a dead shrimp heater and power head for 4 months . Then put in my tank.

I would start dosing phosphate during the cycle. New rock absorbs a ton and having 0 phosphate can lead to an environment that dinos love. I use the brightwells neophos product and a Hanna checker.

I plan to cycle with Brightwell XLM - I'll check with my local expert - a Brightwell guru - about the Neophos. Thanks!
