These have grown in on our oldest rocks, which are about 1 1/2 years old. Some are local Floridian sponges and some appear to have come with live rock purchases. I'll indicate which is which.... and a Tunze Wavebox would help them thrive!

These are a Florida sponge. The rock was bare for almost a year before this showed up.

These are a LFS purchase, came with some polyp rock... and it's pink! Sorry it isn't as clear.

Lucky you XD my sponges are an ugly dirty-snow white-brownish.

They'll soon be gone, though. All my rock is being acid-bathed before moving to my new upgrade. :)

It's encrusting but extremely slow growing, so not a problem that way. All sponges will decay if they die in your tank, I have no clue if some are more toxic than others, but I would think any decay is a very bad thing. That one was the first we noticed, about a year ago. It's spread over a 4 inch area in that time. The one I can't believe is the green branching sponge. I had no idea it was one that gorgonian when I attempted to rescue it (off the beach, it lived for several dies but then died), and was clearly exposed to air. It suddenly exploded in growth and that's when we noticed it. Sponge is great to have though, because it just filters your water all day long.

I have both the pink and gray sponges in my tank too. They are mostly growing on the undersides of my LR so aren't taking room I need for corals so I like them.

I have pink, yellow, white and purple (encrusting) sponges throughout my tank. The yellow is the most dominant though. Mine came from a indescribably beautiful flowers rock. My tangs and critters ate all the macro off it but the sponges remained.
