Aiptasia

How long can aiptasia live out of water? I have a ton of them in my overall, and I was thinking about draining enough water from it to uncover them and let me them die on their own. Good or bad idea? I tried peppermint shrimp and they got rid of the ones in my tank, but they are starting to pop up again, I assume from them spitting babies from the overflow.

If not this, any other ideas?

It seems as though they live through anything. Some use kalk to inject into the mouth of the aptasia. Others use Joe's Juice (or equivalent). Berghia nudi's are another option but it takes a while for them to multiply and eat the aptasia. A Copper band Butterfly will eat them. Many options and not all work well.

The only thing that has worked for me are the peppermint shrimp, but only inside the tank itself. I have an internal overflow and the shrimp can't/won't go in there after them. The injectable cures haven't worked for me in the past.

Injectables did not work for me either. It's very hard to erradicate them completely. They grow in my overflow and that's fine. As they get into my display, the copperband takes care of them. It's a mutual understanding.....they get the overflow....but that's it....lol

I had the same problem about a month back and I drained the over flow for 24 hrs. I had an air stone and both MP40 running. I then cap off the overflow and pump rodi water into the over flow and let it sit for about 10 hrs. The last thing that I did was flush out the over flow to get all the died aiptasia. Just my 2 cents.

Does the CBB nibble any of your LPS?

If you were only close i'll take them and give it back to you clean, my CBB is hungry for aptasia and i literraly try to breed aptasia in my fuge for this guy.

He behaves pretty well Bob. He did recently destroy a blasto that had been in the tank for a year or so but it was showing signs of distress before he took to it. I have cynarias, scolies, and chalices that he doesn't even look at. I've heard that some can nip though - so something to watch out for!

if you can get into the over flow use a razor blade to scrape them off and the collected them make sure ur return is off. and you may want to also suck what ever water is in the overflow just to be sure some tissue is not left behind or they might grow again from that

You should be fine Bob. The Longnose Butterflies have a bad reputation on picking but most copperbands will behave - pm coming on some advice - I'll take it off-line.

FYI, about half of CBB will nip relentlessly at clams(if you have any)

Crap I do, nothing special, but I do have two. I would had to see them munched but it is worth the chance.

please let me know how this goes for you. i cant stand aptasia but i cant take a chance these guys nipping on my expensive chalices... also i have dendro polyps and duncans that im guessing the CBB would devour

I have used Apstasia X & enough peppermint shrimp. The peppermints did a great jo, but I had to help lol. You still see them pop out every now and then and I just shoot them. Still have all of my peppermints and both things have made a difference for me. The thing is that if you let it get out of control then its a nightmare getting rid of them. Good luck!

I have tried the lemon juice trick. It didn't work. Tried aiptasiaX too... negative. Put in a matted filefish and he devoured my aiptasia. Added a copperband to reach the ones hiding deeper in the rocks. They ate literally every aiptasia in my tank. Moved the filefish to my 24 that had 50+ aiptasia that even berghia didn't do much damage to. Every single one of them gone in less than two weeks. Some were growing in my big zoanthid colonies and he delicately picked them out without harming the zoas. Now my zoas are all open again. Best aiptasia control that I could have found.

aiptasia x is no good. the best is blue vet aiptasia control. it has a thicker consistency and sticks 10x better
