By restarting, do you mean you took it all the way apart, cleaned it and then fired it back up? If so, I would wait to add anything as you will likely experience a cycle, albeit possibly a small one.

Did you use tap water? I've never seen a massive blue green slime algae outbreak without the use of tap water.

To get the smell of raw sewage makes me think the flow was an issue. Maybe you have posted up what all your equipment but finding out what the cause of that smell was would be as important if not the most for me.

I actually just went and looked at all your posts and did not find much info on your tank and whats running what, what are doing for flow, filtration etc.

On a side note, I have used tap water and IMO as long as your TDS out of the faucet is not bad your fine. For me I am lucky, our water is around 10 out of the faucet, just be sure to use prime, amquel, or some dechlorinator (sp?)

Anyway listing your equipment may help trouble shoot what went wrong to avoid future issues and +1 on not adding thing really until you are done cycling

Good idea-Sounds like the water got stagnant-I am familiar with those HOB filters for fresh water, I did not realize they could/would be used for saltwater, but the smallest tank I have ever had was a 24 gallon bio cube.
I cant speak for that filter, maybe others have used them.

Theres no way that hob was enough flow, I have a Aquaclear 30 on my 20g so I can run poly fill and chemical media if I need it but no way I would consider that without my koralia nano 425

Good luck on the redo.

A HOB power filter should be sufficient to keep an aquarium from becoming stagnant. The smell may be from the cyanobacteria alone, as it has a pungent smell if disturbed. You never answered if you are using tap water.
