I upgraded to a larger tank and I’m currently going through the classic “ugly phase.” I transferred some live rock with zoas and other corals, added new dry rock, and recently installed an Apex system. Over the last few weeks I noticed GHA and scrubbed most of it off, but now I’ve confirmed I’m...
Hi Guys,
I have some mild Dino’s, I know they are Ostreopsis. I am using the UV sweeper which has really helped but there is a lot of daily maintenance.
Rather than plumb a UV into the display.
Has anyone run a Canister Filter into the display with an inbuilt UV? If so did it work?
Thanks
Hi everyone. I’ve been struggling with dinos for the past couple months. Unfortunately, my tank is too clean, despite my best attempts to dirty it up.
my nutrients last time I checked were 1-3 ppm N03, and 0.09 P04.
I’m doing more water tests now. I’ll have the latest readings in about 30...
I have a 180 Gallon mixed reef tank that has been setup for almost a year now and have been battleing dynos for months now and after doing 2 3 day long blackouts and buying a uv sterilzer I am starting to get desperate, luckily it only forms on the sandbed now but still need any advice. My...
I completed the final day (day 7) of the Elegant Corals Dino Method this morning, and although I still have Dinos, I think it's because I wasn't monitoring NO3 and PO4 during the treatment, so I want to do it again, but monitor (and dose) NO3 and PO4 daily. Prior to the treatment I had got my...
Hi all, Looking for help or insight I’ve been battling dinoflagellates in my reef tank for nearly a year, and I’m at my wit’s end. Hoping someone here has dealt with a similar case and can offer advice or spot something I’m missing.
Tank Info: (I tested my levels before writing this post) 75...
When I first put all the macros in this tank, a dino bloom quickly came about, and it was a mess. A LFS that I frequent told me to do a 48 hour total blackout, followed by 2 weeks of daily dosing of these three products:
And it very much worked, the progress a few weeks later can be seen in...
Hello everyone, I had po4 issues (po4>3ppm), that I managed to overcome with skimming and a refugium, but the problem is for the past two weeks I have lots of brown hairy algae with some bubbles I suspect are dinos. My no3 fluctuates around 10ppm, but my phosphates are less than 0,03, probably...
Hi, can anyone help identify these dinos I have?
There seems to be two species, one large round type that spins in circles, and one which is a lot smaller, kind of a sesame seed shape that swims fast in a forward zig zag type pattern.
Previously I was told I had Large Cell Amphidinium but I’m...
Hi All,
I’ve been battling large cell amphidinium for quite some time now and I’m getting pretty frustrated with it.
I’ve raised my nutrients which have been held at 22.0ppm Nitrates and 0.22 phosphates a couple of months now.
I’ve tried silica dosing, never saw a diatom bloom and didn’t...
I belive I have identified the Dino's in my tank as small celled amphidinium, photo's attached for second opinions.
Through research and reading the Dino thread on this forum it seems the best approach is many, and I wanted to outline my plan for some feedback from those more experienced.
The...
Hello, unfortunately I have Dino’s and I want to dose silica! I cannot find anywhere in Melbourne that sells Silica.
Is it all the same? There is lots for hydroponics. For example:

You might be thinking "There goes an other dino thread!".
But truth be told, there is so much content on algea and more specifically dino/diatoms that my brain is all scrambled as i read one think and its opposite.
There seems to be no concensus when it comes to dinos specifically as far as...
In today’s video Blaine takes us on a crash course on Dinoflagellates. One, if not the biggest reason, why so many aquarists get out of the hobby is dinos. Let’s get a better understanding of why these problems occur, how we can identify these dino strains, and how to properly rectify these...
I recently had an outbreak of Dino's in my sand. I siphoned out the top layer of sand, rinsed it out thoroughly, added fresh saltwater along with the recommended first time dose of Microbe Lift Special Blend and some silicate. One day later and my sand looks pristine---no sign of Dino's other...
I have had recently dosed what I would call a heavy load of phyto. I dosed 50ml to a 36 gallon tank so probably 2ml/ per gallon of water volume. Also I have an oversized skimmer and only 4 fish with light bio load. I notice that usually the phyto will coat the glass and I scrape off no problem...
Selling 2 bottles of Dino-x Dino treatment, 250ml size. Purchased to treat a dinoflaglette outbreak. Didn’t use bottles were never opened.
Will ship. (Extra)
My tank is getting overrun with what I believe to be dinoflagellates. I know small/new tank syndrome is probably part of it, but is there any way to get rid of it? I heard that raising nitrates and phosphates could help, but that’s a scary idea to me as I have some sensitive animals in the tank...
Hi folks, I know there are a zillion posts on this but I want to tell you what I have and get some help with my limited system. I have a 40 gallon breeder I set up in early April. I've been battling coarse hair algae and now I researched and I'm pretty sure I've got a Dinos. I have a video that...
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some help identifying the Dino’s that are in the pictures attached. At least I believe they are Dino’s. I have seen similar pictures that allude them to being either Coolio or amphidinium but they don’t seem to match exactly. Can anyone help me in IDing these and the...
I’m wondering if I am winning this battle with the Dino’s or is it just a false hope. Here is my original post.

I did the things recommended by the posters. Did a few days of blackout, siphoned the sand...
