So I guess it really depends on how the hurricane is moving, where the "direct impacts" are, and if flooding/intense waves are an issue. Trying to understand the severity of a hurricane, haha. Since all we get are EF1-5 tornadoes

Yeah it is weird just because of pathing. Like for Hurricane Ian, it shut down a portion of even the east coast of Florida despite it being very low winds and just a decent amount of rain over there. SW Florida was the area that got the brunt of it. The reason it still shuts down portions of the state (sometimes) is because the storm can change directions so its more like an abundance of caution. I believe for example with Ian it was originally supposed to have a more eastern trajectory but instead it went almost entirely North East. Weather can be crazy. Lets just hope we have a calm period in Florida so insurance rates can settle down.

Even though I make more with higher Insurance rates, I prefer rates being stable. They have passed a lot of great laws though to cut down on fraud and there actually has been massive rate decreases on stuff like Home & Condo Insurance which is awesome.

If I was in Fort Myers & Cape coral I would have definitely booked it and left my home though with Ian. Storm surge is no joke. The major problem though was the reporting on where the storm was going to go was completely inaccurate and it honestly sounded like it would be a small storm up until 24 hours prior to the event. The meteorologists did not report well on the storm.

Ian was the worst hurricane in Florida history and the 3rd worst in the nation's history. It was brutal.

A lot of my family was born in the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area, so we visit down that way every September. I'd say we get run out every other year by a hurricane. With Ian specifically, I remember my family insisting that we wait it out. We were in Indian Shores, and it was @Gumbies R Us first family vacation as a married couple. I was pretty bummed when we were forced to evacuate, but after it was over, I was so thankful we weren't given the choice to "Ride it out". Same thing with Helene. Helene rocked Indian Shores pretty good. It was heartbreaking, as that truly is home away from home for us. We have ridden a few smaller ones out, but it definitely feels like a risk when we do that. When we went back to Indian Shores, they were still doing lots of work repairing the town and even extending the beaches and adding sand.

I can't say for other states that deal with tornadoes, but for us, our meteorologists are prepared ahead of time before a storm strikes. Usually, they will go live from multiple platforms and do everything they can to warn people about an incoming tornado. I personally have never experienced a tornado before @AlyciaMarie can tell you about a couple of tornado stories with her.

Hurricanes, I feel like, are much more unpredictable to forecast. It's always interesting watching one develop and seeing the future forecast where there are 50+ paths the storm can take, and how that changes by the hour. Hurricane Helene, I feel like, wasn't well-reported on either. People in the Carolinas were blind sided by the incident, and where we normally vacation (St. Petersburg) was hit a lot harder than we were expecting.

We vacationed every year in Ft. Myers with my wife’s family . There were about 25 of us that took up every unit in the two buildings. The hurricane was projected to hit Tampa but my wife decided to hold off paying the deposit. Satellite pictures showed both buildings gone and the 7 eleven on the corner completely gone. Still not finished rebuilding. We’re going someplace different this April.

You guys should check out Indian Shores/Redington Shores. We absolutely love it. It's a lazy beach town to me, but still very close to some more hopping places like Clearwater, Tampa, and St. Petersburg.

We NEVER experinced tornados here until an outbreak in 2011. I think the South East (with us included) experienced close to 200 tornadoes that day. But ever since then, we usually get a handful of really scary storms in the spring.

I am not a doomsday prepper but I have a hurricane prep of shelf stable foods i rotate and also have a generator set up to power freezer and fridge, also to power lighting and of course my tank. Hurricane Michael cut our power for 2 days

Our church used to storm shelter prep as well (Mostly canned foods). I don't think they do it anymore, but I am not 100% certain.

Yes, the weather people completely missed with Ian. However, in their defense, it literally took a 90 degree turn about 21 hours out and headed directly for us.

One of the coolest aspects of the whole thing was how the shore waters all got sucked out leaving all the boats sitting in the mud and muck. Would have been a great time to grab a few full buckets of biodiversity! (I know one usually has to go further out for the good mud.)

Indian River Shores is a nice area. I do like how Jimmy Buffet Memorial Highway runs right through it.

St. Pete and Indian Shores feel synonymous to us (although it's not). We slumber in Indian Rocks, but usually find ourselves towards Treasure Island/St. Pete during the day.

I grew up vacationing on Treasure Island, but we've slowly moved a bit north to Indian Shores over the years.

I use other products too, I make a mixture of everything plus one cube of brine and one of mysis shrimp, a little AB+, and that's what I feed the corals once a week.

I also add Fuel and Phytoplankton, but I alternate those every two or three days.

I'm with you on this Luis.

Every Monday and Thursday morning, I will put some new saltwater (not from the tank) in a small container, then I add 1/2 tsp calcium carbonate (DIY coral snow), 8ml Coral Nutrition AB+, 1/2 tsp Reef Roids, capful of Macrobacter 7, two drops ZeoBak, and a small piece of Rod's original frozen food. I put the top on the container, shake it up and let it sit until I get home from work. I like to allow the bacteria to "wake up" and start consuming the foods. Corals uptake bacteria WAY more than particulates. After work, I shake it up and add a little to the tank. I wait about 10 minutes to allow for a feeding response, then I dump the rest in.
