What I want to know is:

When did the electrical engineers of the world decide it was okay to stop using silver plated high voltage contacts? 🧐
I have had the worst luck with titanium heaters. Every time I've used one, I've gotten stray voltage in my tank. A quick search of R2R and you will see that my case wasn't an isolated issue. I went back to the old school glass with a controller.

That's my town in a nutshell, but then there's a beach!

The casinos brought in a lot of crime, as did post Katrina transplants.

Interesting… the titanium body on most models is grounded…

Assuming your grounding is all done properly, you should be getting (near) zero stray voltage with a titanium heater plugged in, not the other way around!

Maybe it was a single unit issue. Everything is max spec on my electrical. But I've seen that this was a recurring issue. No GFCI trip either

I’ll be keeping an eye out for this, then… I keep trying to transition away from ungrounded/breakable/leaky Eheim heaters, but it seems that they still have their place…

I will say that this Hygger is the first “titanium” heater tube I’ve seen actually corroding/oxidizing like this… i’m 99% sure it was never run dry, given that I did a custom installation with polycarbonate mounts holding it lower than the return pump’s inlet…

I forgot to mention that the heater in question is also a hygger with hygger controller. I love their wavemakers, but will never own their heater again.

Yeah… doing a bit more digging on this dog doodoo… apparently cheapo off-brands have been known to electroplate a titanium film over stainless steel heater tubes…

Also, the relays failed at <25% of their “rated” load… a 500W heater on a 100-110 gallon true volume system with 1.8F dead-band definitely wasn’t short-cycling, either…

I strongly dislike trade fraud… this one’s getting a dedicated failure analysis thread.

It could potentially ward away corrosion and maybe serve as a protective buffer against something like a rusty magnet for example.

No go on zinc. It leaches and also corrodes.

Ah, sadly the zinc is in-itself a pretty nasty metal to contend with in a closed system!

It’s a “sacrificial metal”, basically meaning it will corrode away before the base metal it’s protecting will! (But, it’s still corroding into your closed saltwater system!)

The best bets are metals which are capable of forming a protective oxide layer naturally, such as grade 5 titanium alloy! (Or grade 316 stainless steel for non-immersed components/immersed marine boat stuff!)

Exactly right! That's what I meant when I said "something like". It wouldn't have to be as effective in such a small setting. This is a great article BTW.
