Tank just turned 1 year old it is a 50gal mixed reef. I do weekly water changes 10-15% with Redsea blue bucket. I’ve only dosed all for reef from the beginning. The only adjustment I’ve made was to the potassium it was in the 350 range and brought it up to 410-420 with a salifert test before my ICP test. Other then that I have not dosed any other trace elements. This water sample was taken before my 50ml dose in the morning. I dose once per day before lights come on

Couple of observations my salinity was low. I’ve been using the BRS calibration fluid and it seems to be off. I made Randy’s solution and yup it read 1.029 on my refractometer that’s calibrated to 1.026 so this solves my salinity for the next ICP. I’ll be bringing up my salinity with evaporation.

Next is the zinc I don’t know what to do about it? It’s coming from my RODI unit I have no metal or float valves on my unit I fill (2) 5 gal plastic jugs and use those to hold my water for top off and water changes. Per the ICP it’s suggesting
Volume of mixed bed resin filter may not be sufficient (1 liter volume of mixed bed resin should be used per 120 liters of daily output of the osmosis system) not entirely sure what this means? Should I change my di resin? I just changed it a month or so ago and it’s a 2 stage canister.

Not to worried about nutrients I don’t have any algae or anything like that.

What’s everyone think on the results?

Looks really good! I think I read the Zn in RODI might come from plastic tubing (someone can correct me if wrong). I also showed high zn in my last test. I realized my RO line had been sitting a long time when I filled my vial. I was going to flush the tubing out by letting the water run for while next time before taking a sample.

Interesting iron was not detectable but Mn was

Hmm interesting I do leave my hose in the jug while it fills. But I don’t see why that would make a difference since the water is flowing through the hose anyway.

I don’t know where I got the idea it could come from plastic. A quick search cane up empty. I think I misremembered. Obviously it can come from metal parts, but I also don’t have any. My DI resin still has >half the color change looking good. I’ll follow along your thread to see what ideas people have.

My resin is only 1/4 of the way used on my first canister so I’m not sure what the source is. I’ve read other threads that it shouldn’t make past the membrane (1 year old) and if it did other thing would too but ICP only reads zinc and tds reads 00 also hopefully someone chimes in

For reference, once my ICP showed this for Zn in RODI water:

Cu and Ni were also elevated. It is possible these were elevated but I don’t know enough about ICP machines if they can measure that range.

The tank results were this:

I did have some losses at the time so it is possible I ended up with elevated traces.

Your tank measurements look to be in the range right? Did you find out your source for the zinc

At the time I redid the installation so I suspect there was residue/ contaminants in the system. These days I let it run a bit and then collect a sample.
ICP month later showed this:

I always get Zn in the RODI sample, the last one had value of 1.95…

Maybe check the fish or coral food to see if they contain zinc. Some hand creams etc… contain zinc so if hands end up in tank that could be a source.

I just looked up some of my ICP results when I used AFR and zinc was on the low side:

What resin are you using? I’m using BRS color changing resin. The zinc is coming from my RODI it’s it’s high in my di water sample

I think they look pretty good except for the zinc and salinity, how are the corals looking? How about a tank pic?

I am using FM resin.

Your reef looks really nice, FWIW I wouldn’t be changing things quickly. Maybe do another ICP in a month or two to see if Zn is going up/down. I know it gets $$$$ but that reading may be a fluke.

For ICP I tend to take water sample early in the morning, before anything gets into the water.

That’s really looking good.
Thanks

I did the same beside I dose all at once before my lights come on so I had to get the water before that. actually the reason I got an ICP was so I can check it again in a month after dosing isol8 mt. Only problem I see with isol8 mt is it has zinc in it but let’s see how it goes in a month. All the other stuff in MT is needed so ima let it ride.

So you are using AFR and Isol8:mt?

AFR supplements trace elements, so this will increase your supply.
You do like to live dangerous…

Good luck,

All for reef doesn’t have enough to replace all the trace. per my ICP the only thing in isol8 mt that’s high is zinc but I’ll let it ride we’ll see in a month how much it goes up.
