Been posting about my build on the local reef club, but thought I’d put it on R2R as well now that I’ve made some progress. This is the cliff notes version.

Bought a used tank and stand.

Kept the rock in a trash can for “two weeks” in the living room (that’s what I told the wife…whoops), which was really two months.

Did a little work on the RO manifold last night. The bypass is there in the event of a solenoid failure. All someone has to do is isolate the solenoids and open the other valve to fill the reservoir. The reservoir has a float and three sensors (low, full and high) for redundancy; final backup is a time limit on the fill time. Also there is a 40 psi regulator on the RO line to the tank so the solenoids or float don’t have to work against the higher house pressure.

PBT that was added on day 2.
37A16C66-179F-4D99-A75B-ACD05CAE78DE.jpeg

As expected the PBT was aggressive towards new fish. He was tearing up the newly added golden angel; took a few chucks out of his fins. So, I tried the mirror trick for 15-20, and no more aggression towards the golden. Hopefully this works going forward. Video shows the tang going after the mirror; golden was already in this area when the PBT came to attack him, and that’s when I put the mirror up.

Added a few snails too…

The snails made quick work of the algae. 60 are for someone else’s tank, the numbers will drop at the end of the week. With reeftopia’s pricing you’re kinda pushed to ordering snails in lots of 100. With the discount for big orders, free shipping and free snails I definitely got a few more than needed.

The two lines on the outsides are the return lines; I’m setup for dual return pumps. The two inside lines connected together are the overflow lines.

The rise in the return line doesn’t cause any issues with the pumps; I did test this prior to gluing everything up. I had to put the rise in to clear the gate and to keep it out of the way when working in the sump.

The biggest concern I had with the overflow lines was handling the volume and the noise coming back up the secondary overflow without the gate valve. Flow wasn’t a problem. The noise was fixed by putting two 90s on the secondary to keep the inlet under the water; there is a hole drilled on the 90 to prevent siphon. I do have continuous flow going into the secondary overflow.

Gone fishing…

Got every fish in the tank in the trap except the one I needed. Fortunately, the Golden Angelfish decided to sleep under the glass cleaner so I was able to net it that night. Had to come out because it was nipping at SPS unfortunately.

Next little project…

E3D45AA1-DF36-4E91-8CC7-B8999FB820A5.jpeg

Feel like it was a pretty good deal at under $70 for a new stainless dual stage regulator with gauges. Could have gotten it a little cheaper used and without gauges, but the small premium seemed like a no brainer to me. Solenoid was a different order; went new there too because I couldn’t find the manifold used at the time.

Next up are the fittings and metering valve.

Well after a week or so delay due to the hurricane, the remaining parts arrived.

Thinking about using the bottom outlet, which originally I didn’t want. Using it and going at an oddball angle will save some space in the stand.

Alternatively I may still use the left outlet.
