I am new to saltwater fish keeping and am looking for some information on what types of fish i could keep in a community in a 20 gallon tall haven't started the tank yet just looking for ideas and to do further research later.

My current list

5 fish in a 20G seems possible. probably the only ones you'll see more often will be the clowns and gramma. the goby and firefish wont swim much.

edit: welcome aboard the r2r board! hello from PA! :)

Welcome to R2R!

Small fish like the ones you indicated should work OK.

If you want more active fish, rather than clowns, you could consider some of the smaller damsels. While they are very aggressive, the blue or blue/yellowtail and 3 stripe damsels are very colorful and very active and easy to keep alive. If the tank were larger and if you intended other species, some will say the damsels are too aggressive. But they are not expensive and are very forgiving to those new in the hobby that have smaller tanks.

I would try to keep it at 4 fish, although 5 might be possible, but a 20 tall is not wide and not much horizontal swimming space, so its a risk.

The royal gramma and purple firefish are similar colours which might cause aggression.

Remember to have a powerhead pointed at the surface to oxygenate the tank, tall tanks are harder to oxygenate.
