28 jbj sump build

Ok so I'm thinking of doing a sump into my 28 gal hqi to avoid buying a chiller. Has anyone ever done this to their nanocube?!?!?!?

It has the eshopps psk-nano rated for 300 gph, 3/4" vinyl tubing and a ball valve closed just a hair to help stop the gurgling noise. I am actually on pushing around 200 gph through it. First chamber has my temp probe Purigan and a grounding probe, second has a heater and third has the over flow in it (go as big as you can, I already had this one on hand) for the return I had to cut the back of the lid a bit and ran 5/8" tubing over the over flow (with a slight bend) and hose clamped it to the included right angle for the return hole (I had to warm the tube with hot water to soften it a bit so I could slide it over the piece). Hopefully that made some sense. If not and my thread doesn't shed anymore light let me know, ill check back tomorrow and snap a few quick pics

Did you use overflow box or did you drill out the back?

Nah didn't feel comfortable enough to drill so I used a hob over flow

Hey Trenton, I’m not convinced a sump will cure your heat concerns….unless it’s an unrealistically large sump. I have a JBJ 28 with both an HQI and CF hood. I also have a chiller….which I’m no longer using. The reason is that I’ve gone LED….and not the JBJ LED hood or retrofit…..too expensive. I got rid of the hood all together and build my own canopy HERE with a Chinese (Reefbreeders) LED. Now no chiller, and less electricity.

Again, I know you’re looking for those who have drilled, but I strongly believe that this will not cure your heat problem, unless it’s a very large sump.

Well I don't have a severe issue with heat, it sits at 78 and MIGHT swing to 82 usually 80 81 though all my corals are happy though. My general thought is an extra 10 to 20 gal being exposed will tune down the sway
