320 Gallon pricing

Looking to price out this tank as one unit (upgraded to a 540) what would yall price it at? Trying to be fair but not “give it away”! No livestock or rocks (unless I can’t turn down the number).

Light Equipment:
(7) radion XR-30 pros (Gen 2 to Gen 5)
(2) 72” reefbrite lumi light pros
(1) custom light mounting

Tank:
(1) 320 Gallon acrylic tank (7’ x 3’ x 2’)
(1) custom built stand (metal) + shell

Sump:
(1) full custom sump modular system w/ built in 20Gallon ATO.
(1) reefmat 1200
(1) reefmat 500
(1) maxspect AD-600
(2) 3200 GPH Aqqa Return pump
(3) SCP-150
• Mixed wavemakers (for ATO and compartments)
• refugium light (don’t know brand, it’s longer and white)
(1) 80Watt Aqua ultraviolet sterilizer
(1) Aqua excel WiFi skimmer (don’t know size but one of the larger ones).

I know I’m missing something somewhere, if so I’ll add to comments!

I've bought and sold whole systems, mostly much, much smaller, with the largest being 125 gallons, and I was the buyer for that deal. In my experience, you're lucky to get about 40% of the cost of the items new. And, often times I've seen whole systems go for close to "pennies on the dollar" when you figure the cost of everything you're selling or getting, depending on which side of the transaction you're on.

I'm not trying to be a downer, I'd sincerely like to see you get a nice buck back for all that I'm sure you've invested in this awesome system. I just think it's difficult enough to sell a whole 40 gallon system, and your 7 foot long, 320 gallon appeals to a very narrow subset of reefers, even forgetting about the money. I fear this will be a bit of a tough sell

The upside is that if there's anyone shopping for a system like this, they would clearly have some cash to spend, and if you can connect with the right buyer that sees the value in what you're offering, you may both do well.

The interesting thing about 300+ gallon tanks is that they are kind of like a piano. They are either price very inexpensively (sometimes given away) or priced aggressively for just the right buyer. That does happen, but sometimes it can take a while (or never). Good luck on your journey!

Also be prepared for some reefers to contact you and ask if you are willing to piece it out. There are many experienced reefers (me included) looking to upgrade and may not need the entire system.

I usually pay a buck a gallon for acrylics that I can clean up with NOVUS and less if I have to sand. The problem with large tanks is moving them a lot of times. One of the first question I have when I buy a tank Is where is It located and if there are stairs involved I usually pass unless it is a straight shot with no turns.

Oh its in its own separate building, no stairs; I and one other guy were able to get it in ourselves lol. If I did part it out I would either have to move live stock or sell it all in one go.

Problem with tanks that size is not many people are looking for them. Not like a used car or something else that many people are constantly looking at. You need a specific buyer which can take so long. If you have time to sell it you can wait as long at needed but probably best would be to part it out, would be easier to sell to a larger audience. For price I would just make a list of everything new and then think how much your pay for used and the condition

Generally what would yall price it at? They are wanting all of the equipment with it as well. I will also add I will completely buff and wax the whole thing (so it’s like new) when they get it!

Depends what shape everything is in. I would assume somewhere in the mid thousands. 5-8. Depends what you put in it and the shape of everything. A new uv by itself is 1k

Agree, and from what I've seen and experienced 25% - 40% is a good range for used stuff. Also, agree, that a larger system is even harder to sell. The market for large used reef tanks is a tough one.

When we upgrade or move, we always like to try to recover some of our expenses, but unfortunately reef gear is a rapidly depreciating asset.

OP states that a potential buyer is interested. My .02 is start at 40% of what you paid but be prepared for some negotiations and for settling around 25% of cost. If you get that and move the entire system as a package, that is a win. Parting stuff out takes time and space.

You are asking the same question and no one is able to really give you what you are looking for. Only you can answer what is an acceptable amount. Offer, and accept. Maybe a pinch of barter room.

It isn't new so you paid the depreciation tax. I would estimate that being anywhere from 35 to 75 percent depending on how quickly you want to move it. A new acrylic tank in the ballpark of 96x30x30 is about 3400 - 3800 out the door. In some cases shipping was included, others not. Do the same with your other gear and then run some numbers.

The most important question is how long you are willing to wait to sell it? The problem with large used systems is that most buyers are going to make some equipment/configuration changes. They are knowledgeable, experienced Reefers who know what they want and what things are worth. I think all would agree you have a nice setup of good equipment, unfortunately that doesn't translate into high valuation. You also have Logistics issues and that's also a lot of cash for most people. If it were mine and someone offered me 3K I'd take it and maybe even go as low as 2.5, but I would probably part it out if I wanted to get the most value. You'd probably also increase the marketability by having everything drained, cleaned and ready to go.

That does not mean they will pay the asking price. Take Jake's reef builders 400 gallon tank and see how much that sold for.

If you got time and not desperate to sell you'll get your money for them. My local friend just got a quote from glass cages for a 6ft tank, and I cant belive that they wanted $12k for tank his size.

10 years ago I payed $1700 for my used tank, 96x30x30 acrylic tank, when new ones at the time where $3500.
