So I have a 55 gallon tank that was used for freshwater but I want to convert into a saltwater tank.I have seen most bigger tanks use Sumps and refugiums. Could I get away with slapping a hang on filter and some power heads in the tank and have a good sustainable tank.

I use to have a 55 and ran a canister filter. That is about as basic as I would go for a reef tank. Not sure what your planning on keeping in the tank, but they work well for what you need

Also consider a Tunze 9004 skimmer if they ever comeback in stock.

Not many as safe and effective as a Tunze 9004 for a sumpless build. Surface skims and sits in tank so no overflows onto the floor.
