Hi guys,

been in the hobby since 1998. This is my 6 tank and this time I want to follow a different approach to reef keeping. My initial idea was to do a small lagoon tank with no filtration at all unless it was based on natural filtration as for example the use of refugium, mangroves and a deep sand bad. The idea was to be simple and without extra work, just based in water changes and let nature and the biodiversity work.... use some kalkwasser for KH/CA maintenance and nothing else so I would keep it simple to maintain.

Some of my tanks before were simple to complex depending on my evolution and experience in the hobby but I tried a little bit of everything maintaining always 10% weekly water changes with natural seawater (plenty of that here in Portugal) and always use kalkwasser alone or adding any kind of extra help, usually 2 part or the balling method. Some examples from 15 gallons to 265 gallons.

Aqua 3 - 750L.jpg
Aqua 4 - 220L.jpg

Aqua 5 - 500L.jpg

So for this new tank, in the beginning my approach was for a small shallow lagoon with some lps and some sps but after some months I decided to pass to a 80% sps, 20% lps and some gorgonians but maintaining the same Kiss philosophy. It's been a good ride until now, hope you guys enjoy this ride. Some pictures of the evolution, tank is 1 year and 3 months old now.

this was before I decided to change to 80% sps and 20% Lps tank...
As soon as possible I will upload newer photos because I upgraded the light and added some more frags that are bigger now.
Hope you guys like.
Thanks.

Thanks!
well until now it's been a very interesting system to follow. The mangroves, the refugium, and the DSB have been working very well controlling NO3 and Po4. I did an ICP test when the tank reached 6 months of age and every parameter was on the spot, except for Iodine, something that every tank usually has problems complying with. I don't follow numbers but I was curious to know what a "no skimmer tank" does to some minor trace elements.

The only thing that I notice about not having a skimmer was the time that the tank took to balance, but it's something that you can control with the amount of time between new fish additions. I currently have 7 fishes but probably have to add another one or two, due to NO3 and PO4 being constantly at very low levels (0.2 and 0.03) and I usually avoid that in my tanks.
