For the past three years I have had a 40 gallon IM Nuvo tank. During this Time I have learned a lot about the hobby and the care of a reef. I have decided to convert my current DT into a QT and purchase a new 65 gallon tank. Because of all the information and support that I have received from all of you I have decided to document my progress of the build, cycle and maturing of my new tank.

October 3, 2018- The first step of the new build was to find a tank that would fit into my apartment and not make my wife want to kill me hah. I found a 65 gallon cube that was for sale with a sump and custom stand.

October 5, 2018- Once I got the tank into the apartment now it was time to start my planning. I knew the first step that I wanted to do was find that dry rock and sand to add to the tank. The reason That I decided to go with dry rock was due to the fact that many of the early problems I dealt with in my last tank where from pests that had found their new home in my tank. I went to my lfs to find the rock and sand. I bought about 50 lbs of rock and 40 lbs of sand. I got home only to discover that I did not have enough rock. This was the look of my first aquascape that I was not fond of at all.

October 6, 2018- After adding the extra 30 lbs of rock that I had gone and bought I had an end weight of 83 lbs of rock and 40 lbs of sand. Now it was time to begin to assemble the aquascape to a functional rock space for good coral growth.

October 7, 2018- Now that I had found the tank and made my aquascape it was time to put the plumbing and electronics into the tank. For the plumbing I decided to hard plumb it. I have always liked the look of hard plumbing instead of hoses. I also added a power strip that had individual switches for each plug. I have always liked the look of this and the functionality of it.

October 8, 2018- Now we have finally made it to today. Today is the day that the water is being added to the tank. I do not have my own RODI system so I was left with two options. I could go and rent jugs with water to fill the tank. My other option that I had was to hire a company to bring water out and fill that tank for me. The second option was the way that I went. I chose this because the costs were similar for both services and I would not have to lug 80 gallons of water up my stairs hah.

Now that the building side of the tank has finished I am moving onto phase two. THE CYCLE duh duh duh..... hah. Because of the fact that I have dry rock I am planning on doing a true cycle with dead shrimp. On top of this I am going to be adding Macrobacter a couple times a week. Once I have worked through the cycle I will add my CUC for two weeks then introduce my current clown and wrasse into the tank. Once these have been moved over I will then empty my other tank to create a permanent QT.

If anyone has any tips or comments definitely let me know.

Congrats...that's a great looking cube you found and I like the scape. Great write up too. Thanks for sharing your journey and I'm looking forward to watching this on mature.

For the past week I have been dialing in the filtration in and out of my sump. This has been a little hard but I believe that I have found the perfect balance. The surface tension on my water has also been broken and has good flow through the tank. This is exciting news but the most exciting thing is when I tested my water today I had signs of ammonia in the water. I am thinking about adding Fritz Turbo Start to the tank to assist in seeding the dry rock. What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone have success or failure with this product? Let me know what everyone thinks!

Sorry that it has been so ling since I have made an update! I promise I didn't forget about you all!! After a lot of thinking I ended up doing a fishes cycle for 3 months. After that amount of time I added the Fritz Turbo start to finish the cycle. This was a very slow process but I am extremely happy that I went that route. Once the cycle had finished I decided to move my Premium Picasso that I had for three years into the tank. After adding her into the tank I kept an extremely close eye on my levels to see if the cycle was truly over. I tested the water everyday for two weeks and decided that everything was holding steady and was ready for my coral to be moved over. Before I could move my corals over I wanted to upgrade my lighting that I was running. I was running a JBJ Unibody LED during the cycle but knew that this was not the light I wanted to run with corals. This is a phenomenal light and I keep it just in case and plan to use it on my QT when I finally get it set up. I knew I wanted to go with AI lighting for my tank. On my previous tank I ran a prime HD and it was everything I wanted and looked for in a light. I finally settled on the AI 52 HD for the tank. This was due to two main reasons. The first was because with the depth of the tank I would not get full spread if I ran one 26. The second reason that I wanted to run this instead of the 26 was because in my opinion it has a more even spread across the water. So I pulled the trigger and my wife wasn't too happy about the price but hey you only reed once right or at least thats what I told her;Woot I installed the light using the HMS multi-light rail that AI makes. I thought that the single bar across the top was a cleaner look. The other issue was that my overflow is in the center on the back of my tank so even if I wanted the arm it wouldn't have worked. When I moved my corals over I did the acclimation setting on the light and let everything ride. After about two weeks I went to add a cleaner shrimp. Two days after I added the shrimp he showed up dead under the rocks. This brought flash backs from my old tank because I was never able to keep anything but my one clown. I tested the water immediately and nothing was out of place. So then I began to think about the problems that I had been having for the past year and a half. The conclusion came that I had a clown from hell!! So i decided to pul the clown and relocate him to a fellow hobbyist near me. And then came the end of my bad luck with dying fish. I added two Lightning Maroons, one Royal Gramma and a African Midas Blenny. All of the fish were doing great until one of the clowns got ice and infected the entire tank. I ran Polyplab medic for 13 days and to my surprise the ice had subsided but one of my clowns and the Blenny did not make it. Now that brings me to today. Everything is doing great and I still have no signs of ich. I am letting everything ride for a while just so I can assure myself that there is no ich. Ill post pictures in a minute.

Looking good and thanks for the update. Glad you figured out the issue and found it a new home.
