Hey all, trying to figure out what my stocking plans will be for my new 75 gallon mixed reef tank. Ive got a tentative list, but Im not sure what order I should pursue them or if maybe there might be other more interesting options I havent thought of. I know I want to start off with the clowns, and after that maybe the YWG and the damsels. But at that point Im not sure what would come next (Im starting to see "add this fish last" in my sleep seems like). Id love to hear thoughts/feedback/other suggestions on what Im looking at.

  • 2 Ocellaris Clowns
  • YWG/Pistol pair
  • 2(?) Springeri Damsels
  • Coral Beauty Angel
  • Flame Hawkfish
  • Midas Blenny
  • 6 Line Wrasse
  • other wrasses?
  • tang?
  • Blue Green Chromis (should I abandon these due to increased disease potential?)
  • Red Fire Shrimp
  • Royal Gramma
  • Starry Blenny
  • Orchid Dottyback
  • Lyretail Anthias

Get a tang or foxface.
And def the 6 line.
I think you are supposed to add the more agressive fish later/last.

Seems solid. I think the biggest difficulty would be the angel, damsels or chromis. I have a 75gallon as well and have been in the same boat.

I steered away from damsels and chromis due to their behavior and being known to diminish their #s

Bristletooth/tomini tangs seem to be the most recommended tang for a 75g. I may add a biota yellow as my last fish.

My current list if you’re interested: (order of introduction) 3x2x2 IM 75 EXT

2 clowns
Blue star leopard wrasse
Marine betta
Copperband butterfly
2 mandarin gobys
Sunburst anthias
Black leopard wrasse
Borb anthias
Mcosker wrasse
Gumdrop goby
Possible yellow tang down the line

Only fish removed was a flame angel due to being a bully

well Ive started with 2 percula clowns and a royal gramma. thinking I may go with one of the blennys next.

LFS trips are fun, except for having to play tang police every time we walk by a baby Dory tank lol

Issues I see:
The hawkfish will take out your shrimp. Thats what they eat too. So you need to decide between the hawkfish or shrimp. I would choose hawkfish but thats just me, they are interesting fish. Second pick one blenny, they dont play well with other blennies. Midas are amazing, starrys are great for algae. Just depends on if you want a colorful blenny or a utility blenny really. Your dottyback and six line are pretty aggressive fish, add last. Anthias are harem fish, they do best with one male and multiple females (I had one male, 4 females and it worked great). So thats quite a few fish. Chromis either school or they dont and pick each other off. I would pick one or the other of these fish. 3 chromis would probably fit better in your tank. I dont see an issue with the springi damsels, you could even do 3 of these and take the chromis off the list if you wanted to. Royal gramma is fine. I would say youre really capped there, I wouldnt add any more wrasse and I would 100% not do a tang in this tank, very small for one. The coral beauty is a good choice, beautiful fish.

Hope that helps

I’d pass on damsels, fire shrimp, chromis, and dottyback. But what matters the most is what you want.

Other suggestions: Randall’s goby, scooter blenny, tomini tang, jawfish, Australian stripey, Melanarus wrasse, Molly miller blenny, algae blenny, Banggai cardinals, marine betta, yellow Cori’s wrasse

Be careful getting a Blue Spot Jawfish. They’re cooler water and won’t thrive in reef temperatures. Longest captive record I came across here is 8 years and counting, but in the appropriate temperatures. I think IIRC. A Pearly Jawfish and the Indo-Pacific ones, are tropical species.

Don’t see many people have Stripeys. Would be an interesting choice. Not exactly “cheap” in North America, but where I’m from they’re coastal fish that are up there with Sergeant Majors in terms of the conditions they’ll tolerate, and often fisherman’s bycatch.

If you want a Marine Betta, I suggest waiting for a captive bred one that takes prepared foods. Hardy, but wild ones have a feeding hurdle, and due to their nature and where they’re from, I wouldn’t be surprised if many are still caught with drugs. Follow Biota to see if they’re offering captive bred ones again. What a beautiful and unique fish for anyone who keeps it.

I like Basslets and Angels, so, they’d be up there for my picks.

well Im still stuck with 2 clowns and a Royal Gramma, might head to LFS to see whats available. I think Im suffering from paralysis by analysis and overthinking which order which fish should go in (why does it seem like every fish I think about getting is recommended to add last?)

No on the 6 line if you plan to have any other wrasses. They can become very territorial. To other smaller fish too.
