Hey y'all, so I have a 40 breeder. I want to eventually transfer all into a 75 gal (48x18x20) so I know I can transfer all the water. I've read I should buy new sand instead of using my old sand, my concern is will that cause another cycle in the tank. How bout adding new rock. I don't want to add my fish if it is. Another question is what's a good size sump? A 29gal or a 20 long? I'm using a Rapids Pro3 overflow box. Advise please.

How long has your current tank been up? When I did my transfer, the sand was about eight months old and I kept it with no problems. I did clean it pretty thoroughly by leaving about 10 gallons in, stirring vigorously, siphoning, more water, more stirring, more siphoning, etc.
Depending on what type of rock, you may want to consider curing it first. If it's live rock from a LFS, you might be able to get away with it, but anything else (especially shipped live/dead rock) you'll probably end up with some sort of cycle.
On the sump, I'd go as big as you can fit leaving room to install/remove equipment.

I user a 40 breeder as my sump with my 75g DT. You already have one, just use your current breeder. I have a 20g long I have setup as a QT for inverts/corals. I think I would be very cramped if I used that as my sump. But if you don't plan on a refugium, then maybe a 20g long would be ok. I'm not familiar with a 29g or those dimensions, so I can't comment on how that would fit.
A 29 gal is 30x12x18 (have one laying around) a 40 breeder wouldn't fit since its the same width as the 75. My tank has been running for about 3 yrs. now. So if I use base/dry rock, that would be ok? Can I use the same sand or would that just create problems? I would like a refugium to house pods.
