@marine2463
Super nice build and your going to love your S-500

Running an 2013 S-400 and was a great move, with no regrets.

(lol)
When you get tired of the C-Skims noise level do not let @HolisticBear or @SPR1968 ;Punch talk you into a NYOS skimmer.
Go Bubble King all the way and help put food on my families table. Those two are skimmer poachers and my commissions are ;Dead

Anyways... I liked the C-Skim and ran it for a year. Used to use the neck cleaning mode and would use a Tunze brush to clean the neck, during that setting.

If you do upgrade the skimmer:
@SPR1968 and myself use the old C-Skim's hose to feed our reactors.

@SPR1968 and myself are trying to sell @HolisticBear on an S-400

Thanks for starting the build thread and congrats on your new S-500.

Regards, GoVols

:)

By the way do you have a link to your skimmer?, would like to take a look at it
Thank you !!!!

Yeah I got rid of all of them (so I thought) one made it in too the new tank on my rock work [emoji35] I loved the RBT anemones but they killed and damaged a lot of corals in my tank ,they reproduced so quick I had over thirty of them they where every where

Well,
Sorry to hear about your BTA's and I stopped spot feeding mine two years ago. Got tired of them getting big and splitting

Seriously:
Those NYOS skimmers maybe the way to go for price point, and most reefers love them.

(lol)
Just giving @HolisticBear and @SPR1968 a hard time :D

Anyways, I run a BK 160
https://premiumaquatics.com/products/mini-bubble-king-160.html

But, If the BK 180 fits the S-5oo's sump compartment, it could be a good call

And there was me trying to be positive about the C Skim, and save you money (for a while anyway!) and your already tempted to look aren’t you !lol

Ok I’ll be honest then. Just ditch it now and get a NYOS Quantum 160 and just ignore Freddie @GoVols! Lol

You won’t believe the difference in the foot print and performance whatever you get. When I installed the NYOS it just made a big hole were the c Skim has been!

I mean the c-skim isn’t bad I got it pulling up some pretty good skim
It’s just so touchy
Same as the flow control valve on the S-500 you can’t even sneeze in its direction without it changing water levels lol [emoji23] but I’m going to fight with the c-skim for a couple of month or so to give it a fair chance if it don’t get better I’ll be looking for another skimmer

Yeah noise really isn’t that much of a problem for me we have three little ones running around so they make a lot more noise in the living room area
They kind of muffle the c-skim lol [emoji23]

My C-Skim did smooth out and my local reef shop still runs theirs.
They have a 2012 S-650 as a main display.

Hey quick question did you use the built in ATO or did you add one
I’m really not trusting about the float valve thing
I had a smart ATO in my old tank and I was thinking of adding that or buying the TUNZE ATO
I’m using the built in one for now to I get around to it
What are your thoughts or experience with the float valve ?
Does it work ?
Should I use it ?
Or go with the TUNZE ATO ?
I’ve only have about a gallon of water in my ATO just Incase lol

I've ran the built in ATO since day one in 2013.
The float valve has never failed, but sometimes I take it off and clean it up.

Got rid of the plastic screw long ago and put in a stainless steel screw to hold the floats height.

Got and old Tunze 3155 sitting in the garage that use be on a Red Sea 130.

Ive got the Tunze Osmolator installed with a 100 litre plastic container under the power centre. The inbuilt ATO is full but now acts as backup/failsafe.

I installed the Tunze because I needed more water for when I’m away and my system will now last 2- 2 1/2 weeks between refills at maximum although I normally top up the Tunze system every 10 days or so. The Tunze water level is set so it’s just keeping the inbuilt float fully closed.

The inbuilt float is fine but you need to make sure the RO doesn’t get any small particles in it or it will block the float valve. If it blocks attach a similar size piece of hose to the float valve and ‘blow hard’ through it. Top tip from Kevin and Red Sea during ‘one’ of my times of need! Lol

As you have Apex they also make an ATO and I would probably look at that as well, although my Tunze has been faultless so far

I wanted to run the TUNZE from the built in ATO and completely shut down the float valve. I’m using the float valve now but will change in the future. The apex ATO Ive heard a lot of bad reviews on,so I won’t go that way for sure. But we will see how it will go.

You can’t run the Tunze from the built in ATO reservoir because it’s higher than the Tunze outlet hose and it will create a siphon effect. So once water starts being pumped it will just continue draining. The reservoir needs to be lower than the output hose. This is why I just leave the built in system full for redundancy as if the Tunze failed I would get another 4-5 days backup in case I was away.

On mine the reservoir is under the power centre and the hose then goes up to the top of the back of the sump (higher than the reservoir) and then back down to the main return chamber.

As I’ve said before the Tunze is very good and it was the one pretty much most people recommend when I researched it all.
