Am I missing something? How does a brown dookie smudge turn a $50 fish into an $800 fish?

People will pay for anything that is different and nobody else has......pretty much goes for every hobby :( I personally would take the plain 50 dollar one, even if you gave me the 800 dollar one for free lol.

This isn't for 99.5% of people including myself but to say it's not worth it you have to find another one at a lower price. This is a one of a kind fish. I paid a premium for a yellow scopas tang when a regular yellow tang is a brighter fish. It's not one of a kind but very uncommon.

Whats really bad is that sometimes the aberrant markings are not permanent and fade or change as the fish matures/ grows. What a bummer that would be!

To each his own. If someone wants to pay more for the fish because it is different than the norm, it doesn't hurt anyone else that they bought it. I've seen some really cool aberrant fish. Ultimately, if there's no buyer at that asking price, then the price will probably come down (or the fish goes in the store display). They get priced that way bc collectors buy them at those prices.

Exactly, some are very cool and if I had the bucks, I would pay for it/them, but this one absolutely not.

+1 to each their own. If its absurd, don't buy it and they won't sell it. That said, I'm personally not surprised it sold (per above). No matter the ridiculous, $800 to someone isn't a lot of money for something different.

Didn't you learn anything from reef keeping, The dookie stain means the tang has special magical powers that can change an entire tank of fish into trangender fish that use body paint and glitter. :D....... if you play music next to the tank they change colors too, my tang is a big fan of Lady Gaga.;Singing
