So I have been wanting a refugium for a while but my tank is not drilled since it is older and I do not want to drill the tank. So I came up with this contraption in place of the below tank refugium. Hope it works out.

How high is refugium above display? It looks difficult to get to from the edges for cleaning/aquascaping.

The display tank is 125 gallons. Looking to be majority corals in it. There is 25 gallons of water in the refugium.

20 GPM is excessive for 25G refugium.

Consider the relative tank volume per inch. If ratio is 5:1 then 1” of display water will transfer 5” into refugium. Consider that your refugium overflow is 5” below rim of tank and a snail restricts drain back to
display tank ? what happens when display tank pump is located 2” below normal operating water level.

I have done many overhead sumps and fuges they work very well as long as there are safeties in place. You dont want something clogging the drain and allowing the fuge to overflow. A secondary drain can help depending on what is clogging the primary. I have used float valves and relay switches to control the feed pump also, over kill yes but you dont want a saltwater flood should there be a failure. Other than that I think they work incredibly well for growing pods a very natural safe way for the pods to reach your display tank.
