I have had this acan for about 2 weeks and it has never puffed up and it is slowly showing more and more skeleton. I feed is mysis and fish pellets every other day. I am checking my parameters now so will post in a minute.
I also have it in low light and flow. Not shadows though. My tank is 20inch tall and 48 wide. I'm running a single gyre on the opposite end of the tank.
My lights are 2 kessil a360x 20230330_122853.jpg

You might want to dip it if the tissue continues to recede. The low light and flow IME are fine for acans, I have a bunch!

Testing everything right now. Last I checked my alk was at a 9-10. While I was checking my water I noticed my hermits keep going to the acan. I kind of think they might be picking at it. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt thinking they where only getting algae. I'm going to try to move it a bit onto my rockwork and see if it starts puffing up since they won't be able to reach it as easily.
