Acans dying….

2 of my 4 acans died out-been in same spot for about 6 months-grrrr

Alk 9.2
Calcium 480
Mg 1420

Hanna checkers
Nitrate 21
Phosphate .21 ppm

Any areas of concerns-generally this is tank parameters


All other lps and softies ok-watching a golden eye chalice with a little tissue recession on bottom of tank-


anything else to check for-or anything seem major out of whack-

Could just be one of those things-like when randonly my gsp rock just died out

More space for new corals eventually!!

My timor wrasse has wiped out all my inverts-


And only coral i have seen bothered is my foxface eating 1 tip of my gorgonian

All other should be friendly-on paper at least

I would wonder about fish/crabs or maybe do an ICP test to make sure nothing is about to go WAY out of whack. For example, maybe a screw fell in the sump. You wouldn't know unless you ran an ICP and saw the high iron.

Seems strange they declined fast after being ok for 6 months. Your numbers are decent. I have my acans in low light and low flow. Perhaps you should try a dip on your healthy one and see if any pests come out?

Has your alkalinity been stable? I notice several differences in my Acans/LPS when my alkalinity moves outside of the normal range.

I’ve had mine move within that range without coral loss. I think I would rule that out.

I understand that acans can be tricky from time to time..odd that the chalice is showing some signs of distress. Reef stable has a point, could be something you can’t test for outright.

Just out of curiosity do/did you feed them?

No changes in salt brands or addition of anything new product wise ?

How has your salinity been? Are you using a calibrated instrument to measure?

I had a similar issue and mine ended up being a sneaky jewel damsel. I've remives the damsel and they are slowly, very slowly recovering. Wishing you luck in finding the source

I'm not too sure. Corals are just weird sometimes too. Sounds like the ATO wouldn't be too much of an issue. There has to be something going on behind the scenes.

I know you mentioned they're in low flow/ low light - contrary to popular belief I keep several of mine if medium flow/med-high light areas and they do better than I have experienced in the past. I have seen a video that mentions this from WWC. This is purely anecdotal evidence though so take it with a grain of salt. Maybe if you see the other acans decline you could try changing the position, although I tend to be against moving an established piece in general.

You could try feeding the chalice/remaining acans to maybe give them a helping hand. I'll just drop pellets/frozen into mine and they love it. If anything I think it'll help with new growth/general health.

Most of my LPS issues come from alk swings so I am at a dead end here.

Two more questions. 1) How old is the tank? 2) Do you stir up the sand bed/blow off rock frequently? I have had particulates settle on LPS polyps which caused them to retract for days sometimes. Just a thought. Sorry to keep bugging you but I am now invested in this with you

Well, I’m out of ideas. I’d just continue to shoot for stability and maybe try something else. Sometimes we just gotta chalk it up to “no clue”. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Maybe somebody else will have some better information. Sounds like you have a mature system
