I got a big frag of acans from a local reefer while buying some other frags. This frag has always looked horrible and has done nothing in 2 months. Is this normal for acans? I have no other acans to compare to. They were given to me as hulk acans I think…

My acans respond really well to target feedings, particularly of mysis. I like to squirt just a little bit toward them to awaken their appetite, so to speak, and then give them a good feeding a few minutes later. They always grow fastest when I remember to target feed.

I also find they don't need much in the way of light or flow. In fact, I grew one frag in a pico tank with a freshwater light for several months and it did just fine.

Keep them in low light with moderate flow. I have a couple acans that I’ve had for over a year and half now and about 15-20 heads now but start off at like 2-3. They do grow pretty slow. I don’t regularly feed them but every now and then I do. Wild acans tend to lose color as well. What are your parameters

I’ll test nitrates and phosphates.

To me your hammer coral looks fine, so to me this is likely a placement issue, the acan doesn't like its spot. I would move it to a different spot to give it different perspective on light and flow. Not necessarily less light and flow, but different.

Move it out of the sand bed

I have an Acan bought in a similar condition. I placed it off to the side of my tank, on a small rock ledge, where it stayed retracted for at least two months. All else in the tank looked great. All of a sudden it started expanding and looks much better today, though still not perfect. I’m now 3 months in. I’d move it out of direct light, maybe off the sand bed, and make sure it gets some flow. Then wait….
