Just got these 2 acanthophyllia today from Cali kid corals auction. My question is, is this one that is throwing up white stringy substance dying? Or is it just really ticked? Also, the other one has like a 2.5-3in tall skeleton. Is that normal!? Should I keep it like that in the sand or ask someone to use their coral saw to shorten it up? Thank you!!

Looks to me the first is extending its polyps. And the second I wouldn’t touch. White light would help better diagnose picture 1

Acanthos will usually spend the first day or so acclimating to your system; pooping, open mouth, inflating, deflating. That's all normal behavior.

Yes, you could hit it with a bandsaw after it settles in your system. Some can have their skeletons well above the substrate, we just don't see it often because it is usually removed before being sold.
