Acropora is partially loosing its skin.

Please advice if this is no return situation. Just got this frag few days back and upon deeping in iodine solution from sea chem found bunch of white maggots like larva at the base of frag. I cleaned it all up was all good for a few days and now this. Rapidly loosing its skin like flakes are falling off. Do I considered it’s dead or still have a chance for some recovery? Thanks.

This could happen for a few reasons. Since I’m not familiar with your system, I am just give you possible issues. A, dip too strong, B you have it too much light, C it was done for at the LFS and nothing you could’ve really done, C your flow is too low, D your nutrients are too low for it. E your ph dips too low at night and it is a wild piece. F you put it in direct flow from the pump. What are your nutrients and alkalinity look like? As to your question, it’s possible to save it, but it really depends on a type of rtn, some you can stop by fragging off but most types it’s a done for especially at that size.i would just let it be and hope a few polyps survive.it really depends on the rtn type. There is a slim chance it’ll pull through.

Most likely it was the dip. I think I burned the hell out of it. I’ll keep it at high flow and medium light. Some polyps are still open. Regarding my water levels are all good. Everything is flourishing in the tank. Anyhow thanks for your input. If it survives it will be miracle.

Use melafix. It’s very gentle and takes care of the main acro pest AEFW. In the future, try to glue over the plug right up to the acro to avoid being in the AEFW eggs, or remove acro from the plug. If it is a dip related it is a bit more likely to survive. You will know in a few days, if it doesn’t RTN overnight you should have a chance. Melafix doesn’t really kill white bugs, but those can be taken care of with an in-tank treatment if you ever get them. GL

I don't see anything, the pics are very blue.

Need white light pics and more detail of the system. Did you happen to take pics of the bugs?

First I would check for pests every night. Then are buggers and I don't think melafix kills them. At least not in the system. Once they are in, it's hard to get rid of. You might want to do some homework and search on that.

If it looks like it's going south, best bet is to frag healthy and only healthy tissue and remount.

EDIT: it may be helpful to put it in lower light to recover. Like 200ish par or so.

Regarding bugs I did a dip of mix reef dip and melafix used medical syringe to dislodge all visible white larva at the bottom of the frag, none of them made it. Now I set it at the bottom of my system for lower light and more water current. Hoping for it to recover.

No pests for sure. I’m examining every night with a strong light just copepods here and there running around nothing that looks like flat worms or snails.

I managed to save two frags and it seems like it’s doing very good. No more tissue loss. Actually growing green skin over the cuts. That’s for the input.
