Adding a sump question about return pump

Good afternoon Reefers I am in the process of adding a sump. Looking for a return pump. How will I be able to know how strong of a pump I would need to get water flow back up to my DT?
 
Good morning everyone!!!! Been working on sump and plumbing just want to give a update first pic started silicone work not the best but letting it cure and still have to silicone the last plate

Also started the plumbing was cutting to size and now just have to glue was thinking of painting the pvc black not sure

You can paint it if you want. Make sure you use paint that is made to bond with plastic. Krylon used to make a plastic specific paint but have not seen it around in the last year or so seem like most of their cans now say its good. You will need to lightly sand the pvc and make sure to tape off anything you want to be able to turn afterwards. My other comment would be, make sure you have an anti-siphon hole drilled in your return line just at or slightly above the water line on your return pipe. Be aware that while pump is on water will come out of it. Try to angle the hole so the water coming out of it will stay in the tank and not on your floor. If you dont have this when the pump is off the water level in the tank will be pulled down to the outlet level of the return opening possibly flooding your sump.

Looks good! I think the black pipes are overrated but I also hate painting pvc.
