I hope to get a tank soon! Any advice on what I should start off with? What did you start off with, and what would you change about your first experience??

Well how big of a tank would you like to get? And what would you want to put inside of it?

Go big, really big. then all the upgrading and wasted money you can throw into just one HUGE tank.

I would like to get something small to start with. With some clown fish would be ideal for me!

I'd recommend not getting a tank that's only 12" wide. Wider tanks are easier to maintain and aquascape and have more room underneath. For a small tank that would be a 40 breeder or a cube. You can put together a tank rather inexpensively rather than getting an all in one.

Definitely go big.My first tank was a 14 gallon all in one cube,so I had to do frequent water changes. Also the skimmer never worked proper,I would have liked to have a good skimmer in the beginning.I like the 40 gallon breeders as mentioned, great area to work with.

20Long or Regular size 29g. Depends on your plan and probably don't need a skimmer just keep up with water changes.

Take over your dad's tank and post lots of pictures.

If I was to start all over I would probably start with a sweet frag tank. Something short maybe 24 x 36 and 16 tall. Get that rolling grow some stuff out. Than dip in dad's pockets for a big tank later. Lol.

I agree with taking pictures!

Bigger sized tanks are easier and defiantly have a sump with a skimmer and refugium.
Good luck and have fun!
