If your mind is set for a awesome reef tank many think about corals and sometimes we have to deal with algae.
Many hobbyist think algae is a pest but it's more beneficial than corals on so many levels.
IMG_3670.JPG

Once there was a organism so SMALL, no one thought much of it at all.

Hobbyist said it just made a mess and it's ugly.

Until some hobbyist put it to the test!

They thought even some day that SMALL organism could become a fuel and power cars.

Wouldn't that be cool?

But not only cars but planes and boats not to mention it keeps your tank clean and balanced.

And you wouldn't believe how fast it grows!!

It's a amazing little organism with an interesting name........ ALGAE!!

You can even battle the unwanted algae with wanted algae and that's why if you one of the few smart hobbyist use algae as a tool and for that it ain't a SMALL amazing little organism at all.
IMG_3671.JPG

Don't destroy it put it use!

Any thoughts.......?

I let turf algae and diatoms grow as much as they please in my tank. Doesn’t bother me, nor my corals, everyone is happy and healthy :)

I will try and later but be warned I am working on the above mentioned and have shut my scrubber down for a few months now to document the power of an ats. So one of my tanks on the system is full of hair algae for now!!;Nailbiting

I will give it about another month before I put it back in full swing.;)

Actually I may have some let me see!?!

Here is an older one of my reef tank. There is red macro in the back.

On a other note, I have never seen a macro algae tank seen crash but I have seen plenty of tanks seen crash when ppl were battling the algae one way or another.

In my fragtanks I had one side with LR invested with tons of algae that other called Pest algae but my corals on the clean side were full in color.

I have like I said that was an older picture... that was before I had an emergency out of state and had a friend take care of it. He call me a couple days later and said this bottom tank won't fill up(you have to know my system) I put like ten gallons of water in it!!! I told him thanks I would take care of it
Anyway I have xenia, mushrooms, zoa, and palys and of coarse macro now.

Coming from you that's an honor!!;)

Did you know acre for acre seagrass will capture as much carbon and co2 as a forest?

How about phytoplankton produce 50- 85% of the oxygen depending the time of year?

Lets not forget about the ones that keep our coral alive.

Well it seems my phone is a piece of junk and won't focus right let me see what I can dig up!?!

Yes I'm aware.
Talking from time to time to @Cruz_Arias about the algae process.
Billions of drink water daily is produced due to algae filtration.

The only problem is, is that the oxygen in our atmosphere was not created by algae, nor phytoplankton, nor trees.

There are research papers that propose that anaerobic Bacterioplankton, which includes cyano and other extremophile micro organisms produce more oxygen than all of the photosynthetic organisms in the world.

For instance, bacteria break down NO3 and create one molecule of N2 and three molecules of O2 via metabolic processes.

Phyto isn't the base of the food chain, bacteria is. :)

Phytoplankton success and production is the result of bacterial activity that makes nutrients organically available to the phytoplankton and zooplankton...

Let that sink in for a bit! :)

Knowing that they can change bacteria with different virus exposure is an other big picture we should focus on.
Hey where did I hear that before @Cruz_Arias ;)
Thanks buddy always a pleasure talking to you.

Yes sir I do understand that.... that's why I always wondered why people don't use it as a tool. It has been around since the beginning of earth and you think you are going to get rid of it with a bottle of powder.

I know you two do all the research that's needed the comment was mainly for anyone else that didn't know.

With that said I have been working with algae as a people food not so much for fuel.... I could use some phyto. in the truck!!!;Happy

Any articles om the subject?

Diesel any articles on the water purification process and not sure what you meant on you last comment about virus and bacteria? Would you care to elaborate?o_O

Sure I can but understand all credit goes to @Cruz_Arias as this is his profession.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00253-010-2649-5

https://www.leisurepro.com/blog/ocean-news/damaging-effects-fertilizers-marine-ecosystems/

Video footage might be a bit long for some but if you really wanna know why bacteria are more important than algae in the environment to so to say keep us going it is a must listen.

Cruz can you fill in on the water purification process either through micro algae or better yet bacterial.

Btw Chris, I need to come visit and see your new place, congrats on that, you worked hard for it.

Sorry for the pics!!

You can come by whenever just let me know!! It has definitely been something, but a year and a half later here we are.;) I don't give up when I want something that is worth it. It is a work in progress, but who needs to sit down. I have a few extra minutes anyway.

I need to get up there and see that reef tank on steroids!!

Thanks for the video it is perfect timing!!! I was going to explain the same concept to a kid doing some experiments in school and I think it will help him and help me to explain it to him. Anyway would you mind if I posted it on his thread?
