Update:

The combination of manual removal, cleaning out skimmer again, changing carbon, adding denitrate and reducing whites has helped enormously. There is only minimal cyano remaining and is depleting continually

Cheers everyone, glad it was not Dino’s..
Have I spoke too soon?

It has come back.. not as bad but it is back… going to keep manual removing and treat with red slime remover. Reducing lights too and see if this helps

Run uv at night. It'll help if it is dinos.

I have the new tmc vecton titanuv 550 with a max flow rate of 1650l/h

Would you say to run it as slow as possible through the uv or as fast as possible up to max flow rate?

How many watts? I'd run it at the maximum effective flow. . I run submersible bulbs in a blacked out part of my sump. If in doubt check with the manufacturer. Hope it helps. It has always worked for me in conjunction with proper nutrients. Give us an update. Good luck..

Okay will turn it up ta!

I did the kitchen roll test to see if it’s dinos and no algae formed in the water… this makes me think it may not be. I am so torn. Will treat as if it is for now and if no signs of progress, then will order a microscope to determine

It can't hurt. Stir up the sand to get whatever it is flowing to the uv. Be patient.

You need to get it under the microscope if at all possible. Right now we really don't know for sure what you're treating.

Not all dinoflagellates are responsive to UV. Also those that are need much larger UV units and lower flow through them than other UV applications. A 17 watt UV is only good for about a 50 gallon tank for dinos. Flow needs to be very slow for dinos...usually about 2x tank volume/hour.

Post pics when you get a microscope view!
