Algae Scrubber help. Upflow vs Waterfall.

I have been reading articles and watching video after video yet still have no solid idea why one is better than the other. I have a 40 gallon sump on a 125 gallon tank. And just hope that people with experience can shed some light on why one is better than the other.

I'm very interested in this myself as I've been reading great things about them. I'm contemplating taking one of the walls of my sump and putting a hanging acrylic box of sorts close to one end of the sump and then putting something like this on the outside of the glass. http://www.thelashop.com/225-high-power-ultrathin-blue-red-led-plant-grow-light-panel.html
I'm just not sure if you need to have light on both sides of the mesh or not.

I ended up redoing everything. I moved the sump to the basement, and changed it out for a 150 gallon Rubbermaid Stock Tank. And added a waterfall style Algae Scrubber. Even after just one week, I am getting a light build up.
