Started saltwater in the very early 80's, first homebuilt reef in late 1984/early '85 and freshwater going back to 1970 (or thereabouts).

I keep a small system (could you tell by the username? ;)) since I enjoy the 'up close and personal' experience.
Hey smaller systems are harder upkeep imo!

Umm, well as in nearly everything reef related 'It depends'.

Live rock, live sand and bi-weekly water changes with a bit of regular detritus removal...doesn't get much simpler :)
How many gallons are you talking

I'm thinking pico not nano, my bad. Yes nano is the easiest sizes i believe. I have 10 and 20 gal freshwater and then 30 and 55 gal saltwater. I had a 3 gal I used both with fresh and salt and the upkeep on that little thing was tedious lol

The latest trend in Pico is just to flush the whole system weekly (100%, or close to it, water changes). Haven't tried this myself, but there are few now that are 7-8 years or even over a decade old and still kicking.
