I'm planning on building a new stand. Looking for advice. I'm going with 8 foot boards. Even thought my tank is a 225 marinekand I believe either 6 foot or 7 foot long. Nto sure if I should use 2x4 or 2x6? Or a mixture of both. Then it's on carpet also. Since it's in the basement. I'm thinking cutting the carpet out where I'm going to put the new stand any thoughts on that?I will eventually tear out that carpet completely but for now I'm doing just where the new stand will be or should I lay it on the carpet. The other problem not sure what it's called. It's only used if the plumbing gets clogged. I'll have to provide a picture. But here's the design I'm going to use for the stand

On my 125g stacked stand I went with 2x6 for the horizontal and 2x4 for the verticals. Screwed and glued. With a 225 you may want to go with all 2x6. Remove the carpet.

I would not go larger then the tank itself. Use 2x6 and have the tank edge resting above the 2x6. Make sure you are not depending on any nail or screw to hold weight.

Ah, that picture. So many memories.

The stand I built years ago was longer than the tank but the legs were positioned under the corners.

The two ends were accessible for storage/gear.

2X4 is plenty for the uprights but you may want to go 2X8 for spanning that much under a 225g. Like mine, legs under the corners of the tank for strength.
