Any german shepherd or malinois people?

I know fish forum. I using this time at home to research a dog I want.

I'm trying to figure out what's what with bloodlines and trying to find an animal I could maybe use for personal protection.

8 month old german shepherd owner here. Best dog you will ever own. Very intelligent. There is a reason they are police dogs. To say they are high energy would be an understatement.

I‘ve got a Belgian Malinois, he’s the second one I’ve owned. Clyde isn’t an easy going dog by any means, he‘s wicked smart, highly motivated, and EXTREMELY territorial. Clyde is 95%-99% business and 1% affectionate. He’s a great guy to have on my side (my best friend) and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. However, if you aren’t interested in being a dog trainer 24/7/365 you should find another breed, especially if you end up with an Alpha. He never stops testing who’s in charge. He’s been a real test/ learning experience in being a dog trainer for me, it hasn’t been easy by any means. He’s amazing at understanding me, It’s been harder for me to understand him. We communicate well together and work well together now, but it’s been a long road with lots of work on both of our parts.

I have a twelve year old German Shepherd. She’s rotten and a mess orthopedically speaking. So many surgeries, so much arthritis. She came with a lot of fancy papers with an incredible bloodline. Genetics are a big deal but they also jump around. She loves my wife and tolerates me.

I love watching them work. Do you have a recommendation for me or advice? I'll be honest a lot of the east germans & mals ive seen are too much dog for probably 99% of people. I'm hoping I can pull double duty with family pet if that's at all possible.

What exactly is your question regarding these 2 breeds?

Besides the health screening hip stuff. I was curious what bloodlines like east german vs west. Basically if vom whatever is a bigger dog vs the xxx which is smaller etc. DDR is about all I can really find.

Mals I'm pretty clueless besides seeing them work. I dont think there's as much muddy water like the gsd's though.

When I'm looking at a pedigree I'm trying to figure out what's what.

Well there are a lot of dogs that could be used for personal protection. I'm not sure which is better of the two you listed but I'm biased towards GSD's (German Shepherd Dogs).

I am focusing on two of your statements "for personal protection" and "research". My question to you is if you are trained in giving such commands or training a dog to work? If the answer is no then we need to have a different discussion. Especially around both of these dogs. They are, and can be, very dangerous to those ignorant and that is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Something simple as a walk through park and looking to your left and a 2 year old reaching out to hug your beautiful dog...and it bites her. Sued and the dog is put down...

By no means am I trying to discourage but wanted to just raise the question. Nothing worse then ordering a protection GSD and picking it up at the air port only to learn all of the commands she knows are in German... (true story - although not mine to tell).

Have 2 Belgian Shepherds (a Groenandael and a Tervuren - both long haired versions of Malinois). Have owned 2 other Belgians before... very intelligent, high energy dogs. Have had them around young children without problems. Can be destructive if they get bored... don’t have much of a lawn cause they love to dig up my yard. But they are protective and anytime we are outdoors in the garden they will be with us at all times making sure we are ok.

I trained in Schutzhund in the mid 90's. My german shepherd was protection, obediance, and tracking trained. Loved the sport and dog.
You dont know the power of an 85lb dog until its on the sleeve.
German shepherds are great family dogs.
I agree not to get a protection trained dog if you are not in the training program yourself. You must be willing to put in the time.
I was running 5 miles a day with him when we were training.
After he was done with Schutzhund he was the greatest protection dog but still needed to be worked with.
I know a few with Malinois's and they are great dogs but require the time like all big dogs do.
For me I will not get another until I retire and have the time.
I would get a puppy and he would be with me every day for 1 year before I started to train him.
Many are started in training to early imo.

This is what I'm trying to avoid and keep running across. Just way too intense to be with my fam. When I was single it was no problem but now I need something that almost needs to turn it off like a light switch. I've yet to find a mal that's not wide open 24/7. I've looked at Dutch shepherds as well

12 year old East German import. Very intense, high energy, driven, etc. she’d be a tough dog if my hubby and I weren’t active trainers. Even if just one parent is not on their game she’d walk all over them given an opportunity.

Here’s a photo of my girl. Had her since she was 3.5 months old. West German bred. Two hip surgeries, an ACL repair, and a nasty shoulder/left front leg fracture that was unable to be completely repaired. We manage with pain meds.

This is our german I think abt two months ago so she was about 6 months old
Some days u think u will pull out your hair cause u have already told the dog 7 million times not to do that but they smart enough to do it just to get your attention. She chewed on the house, shoes....people......she has a crazy amount of energy. Barks at everything that moves. But she is loving and amazing when calm, very smart, let’s my daughter climb all over her, waits at the window. We are slowing wearing her habits down and lately it’s been better. For the first 6 months I thought I was gonna come home to no dog haha she literally drove my wife nuts.....we referred to her as a land shark! Haha there is a good forum out there they all have the same problems and I leaned on info there to get us through the rough parts haha. She is a good dog and working her way into our hearts each day And absolutely beautiful as well haha. I wouldn’t have done it any other way she will be an amazing farm dog one day!

My first Malinois was the greatest most friendly loveable dog ever, he was amazing. But he was not the norm. Clyde (my current one) is perfect with family and friends that he’s been around. However, he’s not ok with new people at home. If you’re looking for a dog with a chill mode, Malinois aren’t for you, they’re business 24/7
