Will be difficult to determine out of water but best immersed under white lighting
found it in the gulf at low tidePic in the water under white light? Could be an egg case. What did it come in on?
ok to put in reef tank then? Those are tunicates (A.K.A. Ascidians or Sea Squirts) - harmless filter feeders.
They should be fine, yes. To my understanding, though, some tunicates can be difficult to keep alive.ok to put in reef tank then?
im not even sure they are alive , dont see much for movement. i have them in a tank i use to keep bbait fish and feeders in. will keep an eye on them. thanksThey should be fine, yes. To my understanding, though, some tunicates can be difficult to keep alive.
Yeah, you won't see much movement from them - the most you should really see is just them opening and closing their siphons that they use to filter the water (and even then, they should - to my understanding - generally stay open).im not even sure they are alive , dont see much for movement.
Basically, if they're alive, the tunicates will draw the dye in through one siphon and send it out the other. For example:Telling whether it's (still) alive is easy, take some dye (for example baking yeast dissolved in water, that's in many foods anyway, or the glowing green red sea stuff with actual dye) and squirt a bit at the pores of the sponge. If it comes obviously jetting out of the sponges vents (much bigger holes than the pores) then it is alive
