Does the skimmer cup (with rubber ring) need to be adjusted up and down periodically to get the best filtration out of it? I notice if I keep it in the same height for a long period of time skimmate stops forming eventually. Is this due to the level of organics in the tank varying from time to time?

Moving it down gets you a wetter skim that you need to empty out more often. Moving it up gets you a dry skim and need to empty less frequently. I set it somewhere in the middle. It will take you some time and experimenting to get it the way you like, its a good skimmer though.
