Just looking at getting a custom tank built in the future, around 350 gallons. The 2 quotes I’ve gotten, from local builders seem to be insane. The one quote I got for a 96x30x30 was $10,600 ! The other was $9700!

My last tank from glass cages didn’t even cost me half of that, with shipping and boarder fees. That was in 2020 during Covid as well.

What are some other builders state side that I should consider? Not looking for a reef savvy tank or price!

Is that quote for the tank and stand only or does that include the sump, filtration, flow, lights, installation, etc…? Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem too high for a custom 350, if it includes everything it’s a killer deal.

That’s just the tank alone. No stand. Nothing.

Any reason not to do Glass Cages again?
No reason at all, was looking on the Canada side of the boarder because of the tarriffs and supporting local kinda thing. But, will probably consider glass cages again. I miss that tank and regret shutting it down.

Canada, can you do a search on Concept Aquariums, Calgary area if I remember? Not sure if they made it through Covid or not but I know they are decent. I mean I have a display from them prior to that and I'm happy.

I have a bid in now with a custom acrylic and they are lower than what you are quoting but I do not know if they ship up North.

That’s who gave me the $10,000 quote. There local to me so figured I’d “support local”

I did not see that one coming.
Me neither. But they’ve always been on the “higher” end, I don’t think they have a “set” pricing system and just quote what ever they want on a case by case basis.

My friend ordered a 220 from them , and paid $2000… same specifications, except the dimensions and thickness (5/8 vs 1/2).

I had my friend ordered me a cube tank, 100 gallons, cost me $700.

Maybe Dave just doesn’t like me? lol

dang, that does seem really pricy for just the tank. I’d at least want a solid stand (or a discount if you’re providing your own) for that kind of money.

I wonder if they have a big backlog and are charging a premium to take the job.

Also, maybe there’s a big jump in materials costs when you go 30” in height.

Glass Cages are ridiculously nice. I have a Planet Aquariums Mega Matrix and I’m very happy with the build quality.

glass cages are extremely nice, I built and finished my basement around it. So when we moved, it unfortunately had to stay since it wasn’t coming back up the stairs in one piece.

Photo is my wife and father in law. More photos on my build thread I think

New tank would be 96x30x27, and they quoted 5/8 glass for it.

My glass cages was 84x32x30 and 3/4 inch glass.

Have you talked to Joe ?

It may be for canada. Everything has gotten crazy expensive here.

Hopefully not tho
Planet Aquariums has a dealer network so you’re always going to have an extra markup. Maybe someone here knows how their pricing works but if the retailer has flexibility on their end you might find one who takes a smaller cut. Considering that you know exactly what you want and they don’t have to take the tank into inventory it’s easy money.

I’d work that angle and I’d definitely get a quote from Joe.
