I might be wrong, but I think that is solely on how you want to run your tank. The purpose of having porous rock is to give surface area for micro fauna and bacteria to inhabit. Having a larger surface area makes it filter out the nutrients that can be harmful to a tank in large numbers.
The short story to this, if you want to reduce what additional things you're going to have to do make sure it's porous and has a lot of surface area to it. If not, be prepared to add additional means for those bacteria to grow on or remove unwanted nutrients.
Personally, I think you're fine with what you have. It looks to be about the same amount as I have in my 32g.
