I am trying to so that it is possible to build a basic reef Tank on a small budget. Now I am seriously wondering if anyone Cares. I am not trying to centre anyone out or accuse anyone here. I am just Interested in some Honest Opinions.

I have Three Children. Two of them have no interest in actually saving money , or are concerned with the future I believe . My Son who just told me with a happy note that his mortgage has a 3.5 % rate. However I know that the mortgage is probably in the hundreds of thousands. He buys anything he pleases forhis three children . Which is great they are really good children , and have no idea of course. My Other one lives day to day

So my question is for the Younger Reefers. I have a friend ??? who says stuff to me like " are you still raising your minnows " ? My wife calls my basement SeaWorld By the way I have no mortgage. I have no idea what others are saying.

1) Do you get ridiculed about your Hobby ?

2) Do you have friends that want to do what you do but cannot find the money ?

3 Do you get grief from your partner about spending money on it , or just don't like the looks of it ?

This is a great thread - thanks for sharing! This issue may not be limited to young reefers. I lean into the poking and if I got that kind of feedback I would get a custom t-shirt that says "minnow keeper" with a silhouette of a generic minnow. Additionally, I would hang a sign above the door or in the basement that says "SeaWorld". I have learned so much from my fish and am a better person because of them.

2 ) Those that dont like you for the wrong reasons

I started to be sensible with money/girls/life when I was around 30 and I expect my kids to be really stupid with money/girls/life for a good while as well and then later smarten up.

I actually want them to splash out on a car they can't afford as soon as they have a driving licence and mess up things and face the consequences, thats how I learned, thats how they will learn

Any time there’s any feedback such as “why is it so expensive, why are you spending so much time on it, etc” my usual response is “alternatively I could be sitting in a bar”.

I focused on teaching my kids risk management when they were five years old. Somehow it stuck and they are now becoming adults and surprisingly making (mostly) good decisions.

Hey happy you are mortgage free too!... I am totally debt free and never use credit card. Worked my butt off for like 20 years sometimes two jobs at a time...just to save money and give my girl the things she wanted within reason...been 30 plus years now...
sounds like you did worked hard and got to a good place....so enjoy the things you want to...
Maybe try and get your wife interested in "seaworld" and then you guys can share a common interest.
My girl loves zoas and lps so thats the common thing that created her interest..now she loves tangs, clown fish, triggers etc...
Yes, I understand "friends, neighbors etc" sayin things out of envy..Don't let that discourage you from the things that make you happy...Life is a one way ticket, and you do get a do over cause the next part of your life is when we all die...( I do not mean to be dark or negitive, I am just one who doesn't sugar coat anything)
Make the seaworld sign....
I am going out on a limb here, but maybe put a sofa or two reclines in your tank room and get some wine, or coffee and take her to the seaworld for some relaxation time. That what we do...make it a new twist to it..
My friends come over to do that, bring coffee or a beer and chill in front of the 300..
They used to say, you spent a small fortune on this tank waste of money NOW they are like this is awesome better then tv. It has taught them to be people again, put the phones down and talk to each other and help each other and to destress from the bad in the world...we have seen alot of bad doing what we do for the good of mankind...Thankfully none of us got shot....Feel we are being watched protected by a higher "heaven " group. That all I am gonna say about that...
I got a girl and we support 110% each other, and this came with time and probably because we are wired the same...
So enjoy your life without upsetting others, be happy and if you can share your experiences and make others happy...This world is getting to dark....

No, but then again, I don't walk down the street telling random people what I do or how much it costs.
