What is the dimensions of the unit? I am thinking this is way overkill for a 50 gallon tank?

It's going to be around 12" x 7" x 21" tall. And I personally don't have experience with it, I got it 2nd hand, and was included with my tank. It could be beneficial depending on what else you have running on the tank. I have a 250 and ran out of space in the sump for it. I have other avast marine items and they're top-notch, but just depends if you have the space and like the benefits it provides.
