Backup strategies for Apex and its components

Have done some research on this and it looks like most folks have gone with the approach of buying duplicate components and swapping them out quickly if something fails, especially the main unit.

I am very interested in protecting my investment so I am looking for ideas and strategies you are using in the event of an equipment failure of your Apex or any of its components.
 
There is an option to save your current settings to a file so you can restore that to the new unit. However, I think it has to be the same kind like apex full to apex full is OK. I tried apex full to apex lite and it did not take that very well. I had to reset the apex lite after trying to load my old settings of an apex full onto the apex lite.
Also the bus enumeration is might be tricky. I don't know it the ID of a module stays the same if we switch it with an identical piece. It should but I have never tried that so I don't know.
 
Looking back I should have just bought two Complete systems.

I wound up buying an additional Display, pH probe, and two
additional EB8's and now I plan on buying a spare main unit.

Something to consider.
