not only that, but food coloring is probably a lot more expensive, and a lot more water soluble, than the uber cheap dyes that are probably available in bali and elsewhere, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a regular clothing or hair dye, which could possibly have negative effects on the tank that the corals are put into as well

i would think any oil based dyes (like those for shirts etc.) would be toxic to dye corals with.

my guess would also be food coloring that is used. it would have to be water soluble, and non-toxic.....

prob the same thing they use to dye carnation flowers possibly?

It seems that there aren't that may articles concerning this issue. There are a couple that you can google and they pretty much say the same thing. My ultimate goal is to try and revive this bad boy from extinction. I've inherited this coral piece so, like all other problems that arise in this hobby they only way I can learn/master it is to try and ride it out. IMO returning it to the store and getting a full refund is the easy way out.

So far so good. I'm upgrading my skimmer and its going to come in tomorrow so I'm anxious to see what it can do. I ordered the TUNZE 9010 Protein Skimmer, it isn't as efficient as a "Beckett Skimmer" but for the amount of electricity it uses its efficient as far as energy wise.

Since the dye is a means of visually seeing a skimmers performance aside from the skimmate itself, I might as well take advantage of a bad situation.
