Beginner frags ideas?

Id hook you up but your in maine, id give you all the cap and birds you wanted. No local reefers around you ?

There's some. But mostly on the other side of the state. One or two LFS with a meh selection. There's a local guy with a decent selection idk about his prices though. Local reefing community is kind of quiet

Ive never heard of them either, LPS are easy hammer frog spawns although they are pricy nowadays and dont grow all that fast, duncans are pretty forgiving also.

I love torches but yea, way crazy prices. I was hoping I could colonies established, frag and trade for some torches with someone. Maine has a decent enough reef crowd but I'd be a couple hour drive most likely so if I order something unique at least most likely no one else will have it lol

Yeah if you look at last page of my build thread thats a years growth. Its grows pretty cool.

i had one in my first reef tank and it was all pink when purchased after a month it colored up nicely with the bright pale green stripes under a 14k phoenix metal halide. they are a lower light, lower flow coral if you want full extension.

The answer to this question is to get a little bit of everything cheap, and see how it does in your tank.

The most impactful organism in your reef tank is YOU. The most important parameter is YOUR BEHAVIOR. Feel out what works for you, and nurture that.

Besides, it’s way more rewarding to have big healthy coral that may not have been your first choice, than to watch your dream coral waste away because it just doesn’t work in your tank. Especially if it’s your first rodeo.

I have been looking for one for awhile now. They used to be quite common but those and bubble corals are a bit more difficult to get your hands on these days.

IMO the best corals for starting out are cheap corals.

1. If they die you’re not out a small fortune.

2. These corals are often cheap not because they’re boring but because they’re hardy and do well in aquariums so there’s a large supply for frags out there.

Softies: Zoas, GSP - on a back wall away from rock, or on an isolated island. I had also both waving hand anthelia and pulsing Xenia. I really liked both for the growth and movement, but each kept sending out polyps to colonize other parts of the tank so I eventually pulled them.

LPS: Frankly there’s a ton of options here - IMO these mostly aren’t huge “take over your tank” hazards but many options are economical and look nice, especially if you have patience for frags to grow. Main caution would be to read up on aggression and plan for space - a lot of these things don’t play well with others.

SPS: Cheap almost always means hardy and fast growing. For the branching types a lot of digis and stylos are good, and birds nest - due to an unplanned “fragging” incident I now have this stuff growing in four different conditions in my tank and they’re all doing well. There are also a few acros - IME frog skin does OK, then there’s the green and purple slimers that are noted for doing well in aquaculture. The plating/encrusting ones can do really well to, the notorious red Monti is an options, though some complain it takes over too well, then there’s a few greens that do similarly well.

I didnt know red monti was "notorious"! I'll have to read up on that. I dare say, plating, chalice, sps and torches are my favorite but doesn't mean I should start with them lol. Cheap will be the theme of my first purchase though
