Hello fellow reefers,

New to the hobby and also have defective colour vision. Currently using salifert test kits but I struggle to read them accurately so have to constantly ask the mrs to check them. Is there any test kits that are easier to read, or I am best just using salifert and relying on the mrs.

Thanks in advance

Dom

Dom,
Get the Hanna alk (dkh) Checker for testing your alkalinity.

I'm not sure about their other checkers?

@jsker
Jeffery
Do you trust any other Hanna Instrument checkers?

Thanks,
Freddie

Agree with all above, I have Hanna checkers for Alk, Copper, and Phosphates. They also make one for Calcium as well.

No calibration, just keep the vials clean.

Thanks for the reply. Are the hanna checkers easy to calibrate, was told they are difficult but don’t know how true this is.

The Hanna alk (dkh) checker is a breeze to preform... :)

Never heard of apex trident, I’ll have a look now.
The only drawback is you have to have a Apex 1st. If it is the cards then I would suggest it or GHL or Alkatronic. I have a Apex and will be getting a Trident myself.

That’s good then, might order the Alk and phosphate.
Order the cleaner also, they recommend cleaning after every use, I do it roughly every 3 to 5 uses.

Yup, as others have mentioned Hanna for Alk and Ultra Low Phosphorus (reads ppBillion, not ppm) these reads the colors and provide the concentration numbers for you.

I use API for calcium, it goes from pink to blue. It is fairly coarse, but the change to totally blue seems kind of obvious. With practice, I find it easy to determine ballpark for calcium, which if your parameters are stable (and good, in my case +400-440) the ballpark is good enough.

Nitrate I like Salifert, and I also ask the Mrs to double check my work. I have also gotten calibrated by her second (better set of eyes) opinion so that I can perform Nitrate and Calcium with these kits and get reliable repeatable results.

Hanna gives you the numbers. They make standards you can buy. Use these to check your meters to see if they are off and how far off they might be. In most cases stability is more important than being a few ppm off.

Thank you, does the cleaner cover all hanna tests, or does each checker have its own cleaner?

The cleaner is for the glass vials. RODI water and a q-tip works just as well. You dont clean the meters. If you clean the vials as soon as you are done the die will not stain them and they will last a long time. They are std 10ml glass vials and are avail for pretty cheap if you are prone to dropping them on the floor . (who me? )

It cleans all the outsides of the of all the vials. The vials for the testers are all the same, a vial with a 10 ml line. Its kinda like a alcohol based cleaner. After every use I rinse the inside with RO/DI water and leave it empty to dry. I then clean the outside with the cleaner.

This is the alk checker. Easy to read. These are the vials that go in it. These happen to be stds. One is 0.0 the other is 5.0
You might not see the color difference but the meter will convert the color to a number for you.
They have online videos on how to use them.
