My birdsnest is a grower and is starting to approach the waterline - any harm in letting him figure things out or is it best to trim? Most important that I don’t lose the colony

It's a judgment call. Allowing it to get to the waterline won't harm anything but it will definitely stop growing there and develop weird tips.

On the other hand I have quite a few colonies that stopped short of the waterline, as if it knew it was getting close.

Personally I'd leave it alone and letting it do its thing.

Sounds good! Yeah Ive already had to move him - he used to be in the middle but I had to move him towards the back since he was blocking light and angering the frogspawn lol

It will either stop just short of the waterline, or sort of "table out" when it reaches the water line. If you leave it be, and it starts to "table out" it will look very weird. I would either trim it, or move it down.

Just grow it: Have you ever added CO2 to your reef tank?
