Birdnest problem

Seritopora birdsnest looked dusty around base. Never had problem before. But someone told me API test ran diffrent with alk. So I brought alk up. i usually keep my dkh between 9-11. but it was doing really well when betwwen 10-12dkh on api test.all coral did well and showed good growth and respond really well to that range! just to test and i brought it up a lil more over time to dhk 11-12.5 thats when my seritopora only one of 4 got dusty around base and that dusty kinda crepped up untill i knocked it off. when i knocked it off it looked like cigarette ash?
