We have made pets of what many people eat to survive. It is what it is.

Some are more attractive to look at than others so they become ornamental. People eat fish everyday but no one bats an eye. In some areas the fish we keep in tanks are what's available to eat. I saw a video of a native spearing a huge sailfin tang once. That's how they survive. Triadacna clams, shrimp, crabs, stomatopods, eels, fish are all dinner for many people.

It's expensive to keep them alive so the cost for us to keep them as pets is higher than putting them on ice for food.

You should definitely stay away from the Fish Markets in Hawaii then, but if you must bring Kleenex....lots of Kleenex. Nothing unsettling about seeing a few dozen fresh caught Orange Shoulders, Naso, Bluespine Unicorns, Blochii Tangs and in another bin of ice seeing beautiful Triggers a Parrots on display. I'm sure they're tasty but just cannot think how nice they would look in a big Reef Tank or swimming around the Reef again.....oh well... it is what it is....

Cheers, Todd

You know when you think about it these fish were not put on earth to be caged inside glass boxes. Are we wrong for housing these precious creatures? My thought is if we provide them with the proper envirement their life is probaly better than being in the wild. I do beleive they were created to be a food source.

I know that oscars are freshwater, but people eat those all the time and some people thing of those as pets only. Also lionfish are good to eat. I don't feel as bad with them cause they are invasive.

I wanna keep brook trout XD but out here, we eat 'em.

Actually, some communities have been eating tropical fish less because they can make more money selling them for aquariums.
