Blue starfish

A buddy of mine bought 2 blue starfish yesterday. He woke up this morning to what appears to be a chunk missing. I don’t have much experience with starfish so I told him I would ask our community. Here are 2 pics he sent me. Any help or ideas what he should do?

I cannot tell if it is a Royal Starfish or Blue Linckia Starfish in the pic but what I do know is that it is best for them to away from parasitic snails and some hermit crabs.

Hopefully, the crab in the foreground is cool and hasn't developed a taste for them.
