Blue tang growth

I love blue tangs, my LFS has some baby blue tangs. I’m wondering how long I could keep it in my 138l tank (3ft long) before rehoming to a bigger tank?. The only other fish I have is 2 clowns. I appreciate they need big tanks but was just wondering if it was ok to keep one for a year or so before rehoming.

I’m limited for getting a bigger tank as I’m in a first floor flat and have no way of finding out weight restrictions. However that’s a fair point.

The regal blue tang will grow big- and fast! Do you have a plan for when that happens? :) Will You hand it back to the LFS- or will you upgrade?

It is hard to say for how long, i’d say between 1-2 years but fish don‘t all grow at the same rate..

ideally, a regal blue tang is very active, requiring a large tank, preferably at least 100 gallons or more. I’d say 6 feet would be ideal for a full grown one.

Sadly we’re not blessed with the big American homes over here in the UK ;) We need to make due with smaller tanks.. And smaller tangs!

I know! I can’t seem to find any fish that will fit in my tank that aren’t either aggressive or gobies that can’t be kept in my tank cos no matter how much I try make it jump proof, they always find a way

The struggle is real! We’re making a stock list for a 4 x 2 x 2 foot tank curently, lots and lots of compromise indeed!

maybe go for a different fish, theres no lack of fish in the hobby, and tangs are expensive.

blennies, sand sifters, watchmen, sharknose gobies, chalk bass, royal gramma, clown goby, clownfish are all good picks imo. You can also go for an all coral and coral dwelling invert tank, those are amazing.

Any kind of goby is out as despite having a jump guard they keep managing to get into the back compartments of my tank somehow.

Gobies are one of the most expansive "species" some common ones are jumpers, others like the ones I've suggested are not really known to jump

I’ve had a watchman goby that everyday I would find it in the overflow part so I rehomed it. I got a tiny clown goby last week and within the first day it got into the overflow so I covered the vent with mesh and it was back there the next day then it disappeared. Not on the floor, not in the overflow or the tank.

you sure the flow isnt too high or a param issue? how are the clowns? any inverts?

The size of the tank will actually have an effect on growth from the get go. So by the time you think it's too big, growth has already been stunted.

no it doesn't lol. They stop growing in smaller tanks because they become stressed and stop eating and eventually starve...

No all the parameters are fine. Clowns are only nippy with me sometimes but mostly just care about their next feed. I’ve got a tuxedo urchin, fire shrimp and one hermit crab.

theres a chance your clowns chased everything else out. Those guys can be mean lol
