The Boston Bean Cowfish is a striking blue-and-yellow boxfish relative, is a fascinating but challenging marine species to keep in aquariums. It requires a large, mature tank with open swimming space and minimal sharp rockwork to prevent injury, as it’s a slow, awkward swimmer. Cowfish are peaceful but slow-moving, and they can release toxic substances when stressed or injured, so tank mates must be calm, non-aggressive species. They are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet of Gamma frozen meaty foods, Nutramar pellets, and algae, 2–3 times per day, to maintain health and prevent coral or invertebrate nipping. Water quality must be pristine and stable, and a secure lid is essential to prevent jumping. With careful care, a Boston Bean Cowfish can be a unique, long-lived centerpiece, but it is not reef-safe and best suited for species-only or FOWLR setups.
